GENEVA – In an unexpected twist, Nestlé, the Swiss-based food conglomerate, reported a massive theft involving its beloved KitKat chocolate bars. Approximately 12 tons, equating to about 413,793 candy bars, vanished after departing the company’s Italian production facility, destined for Poland.

Nestlé, headquartered in Vevey, Switzerland, issued a statement on Friday confirming that both the transport vehicle and its precious cargo remain missing.

The shipment, consisting of the iconic wafer-and-chocolate treats, mysteriously disappeared last week during transit from the production plant to its distribution site. These KitKat bars were intended for distribution across various European countries.

Concerns are rising that the stolen chocolate might surface in unauthorized sales channels throughout Europe. However, Nestlé reassures that each candy bar can be tracked through its distinctive batch code, ensuring traceability.

A KitKat spokesperson explained that consumers, retailers, and wholesalers could verify whether a product belongs to the stolen batch by scanning the batch numbers on the packaging. If a match is detected, clear instructions will be provided on how to notify the company, which will then take the necessary steps.

“While we recognize the criminals’ sophisticated taste, cargo theft poses a growing challenge for businesses worldwide,” the KitKat brand remarked in their statement.

“With more sophisticated schemes being deployed on a regular basis, we have chosen to go public with our own experience in the hope that it raises awareness of an increasingly common criminal trend,” the statement added.
