Woman killed in shooting at Westside home; Jacksonville police investigating

Fatal Shooting at Westside Residence Under Investigation by Jacksonville Police

A tragic incident unfolded on Jacksonville’s Westside Monday morning when a woman was discovered with gunshot wounds in the yard of a residence on Justin Road East. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) reported that she succumbed to her injuries after being transported to a hospital.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the shooting, which occurred near Herlong Recreational Airport. During a press conference on Monday evening, a homicide detective from the sheriff’s office detailed that officers were dispatched to the scene following a shooting report at approximately 10:25 a.m. There, they found the woman critically injured in the front yard. Despite medical intervention, she was pronounced dead at the hospital.

While the exact details leading to the shooting remain unclear, a woman identified as a person of interest was taken into custody at the scene for questioning, according to the detective.

Inside the home at the time of the incident was an infant, who has since been placed temporarily under the care of the sheriff’s office’s Victim Services.

The circumstances of the shooting were not immediately known, but a female person of interest was taken into custody at the scene, the detective said, and was being interviewed.

A baby was inside the home at the time of the incident, and was taken into custody by the sheriff’s office’s Victim Services temporarily.

It is unclear how the people involved are related.

The detective said the incident is believed to have been isolated and no further threat to the community is expected.
