Fugitive Dezi Freeman shot up to 20 times
The seven-month manhunt for Dezi Freeman ended in a hail of bullets outside his hiding place in north east Victoria, with police understood to have shot him up to 20 times during the tense stand-off.
Police fired multiple shots at the fugitive as he emerged from the caravan-cross-shipping container at a rural property in Thologolong, wielding a gun stolen from one of the slain officers in Porepunkah.

The tense standoff between law enforcement and a man named Freeman came to a dramatic end after Special Operations Group members spent three pivotal hours trying to secure a peaceful resolution. Despite their efforts, the situation escalated, culminating in gunfire.

Freeman was indeed armed, though Victoria’s Chief Commissioner Mike Bush has not been able to definitively confirm if Freeman fired his weapon at the officers during the confrontation.

In the days leading up to the incident, investigators had been closely monitoring Freeman’s movements. They had tracked a vehicle frequently traveling back and forth from his hideout, located approximately 200 kilometers between the towns of Porepunkah and Thologolong on the Victoria-NSW border, before the fatal exchange occurred at around 8:30 a.m. on Monday.

Reliable sources from 9News indicate that detectives utilized traffic cameras to follow the vehicle’s repeated trips. This surveillance operation ultimately led them to Freeman’s secluded location.

Following the incident, Freeman’s body was transported to Melbourne, where an examination by the state coroner will take place. This step is crucial as the coroner will conduct an independent review into the circumstances surrounding Freeman’s death.

A formal identification of his body has now taken place.

Police are expected to remain on scene in Thologolong for several days, combing the property for any evidence of other people at the property.

Investigators are now looking at whether Freeman was assisted by anyone during his time on the run.

Police have asserted it would have been very difficult for the fugitive to remain hidden for so long without help.

Anyone who may have helped harbour Freeman, or transported him from Porepunkah to Thologolong, could face up to 20 years in prison.

“We’re going to track backwards, work backwards from yesterday and find out to work out who did assist him and those people, when identified, will be held to account,” Bush said.
