On Thursday, Western Australia Premier Roger Cook revealed plans to enact emergency powers aimed at enhancing transparency within the fuel supply chain. This strategic move is intended to empower the state to compel industries to disclose crucial information about fuel distribution.

The decision grants ministers the authority to demand essential data from suppliers, ensuring that fuel is prioritized and allocated to areas with the most significant need. This step is seen as critical in maintaining a steady and reliable fuel supply across the state.

Simultaneously, while Cook was making this announcement, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivered an unusual national address highlighting the economic ramifications of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The timing underscored the broader importance of energy security amid geopolitical tensions.

Premier Cook emphasized that, despite reassurances from major suppliers predicting a steady fuel shipment throughout April, the ongoing conflict has disrupted fuel distribution in crucial regional areas. This has particularly affected sectors such as mining and agriculture, leading to localized shortages.

“I have made it clear that my priority is to safeguard the interests of Western Australians by ensuring that fuel reaches the areas of greatest need,” Cook stated. “While we have had some success in directing fuel to our regions, our efforts are hindered by a lack of complete visibility into the fuel supply chain.”

“We have had success in ensuring fuel is reaching our regions, but our efforts are being hampered by not having full visibility of the fuel supply chain.”
