In Los Angeles, a routine traffic stop escalated into a tense situation early Monday morning, resulting in the arrest of a man and the fatal shooting of a dog by police.

The sequence of events began shortly after 1 a.m. near the 5 Freeway, as reported by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers inspecting the driver’s white sedan discovered a package that appeared suspicious. This discovery led to the involvement of the LAPD bomb squad and the precautionary evacuation of nearby residents.

“While conducting the evacuation, officers were confronted by an aggressive dog that attacked, leading to an officer-involved shooting,” explained Lt. Bruce Coss.

The officer who was attacked was quickly transported to a hospital for treatment, while the dog succumbed to its injuries at the scene.

Speaking with ABC Los Angeles affiliate KABC, a woman claiming to be the dog’s owner revealed that the animal was a 5-year-old pit bull.

The shooting happened as she was just down the street and her boyfriend was in the process of evacuating the dog and her newborn puppies.

“I don’t know why. It’s hurting me so bad. And the cops are not giving me any answers,” Chankara Beshay said. “She’s protective, but it’s different because she has puppies. You know how dogs get overprotective when they have puppies.

Now, two investigations underway.

The LAPD’s major crimes team is handling the investigation into the suspicious package containing explosive devices, which was eventually deemed safe.

One person was detained for further questioning on that.

The other investigation involves the use of force portion involving the shooting and killing of the pit bull.
