A man has made history as the first individual to be charged under defense legislation for allegedly collaborating with a foreign military without proper authorization.
The case came to light after Australia’s Department of Defence flagged it to the Australian Federal Police (AFP), prompting an investigation into the 25-year-old suspect.
He returned to Australia in January of this year, prompting further scrutiny.
Defense laws in Australia restrict certain individuals from working with foreign militaries, governments, or companies unless they have received prior approval.
As part of their investigation, police executed a search warrant last Thursday, April 2, at a home in Felixstow, where they confiscated several electronic devices, including a mobile phone and a laptop.
Upon forensic examination, these devices reportedly contained images that connected the man to involvement in a foreign conflict.
The man was charged with working without authorisation for a foreign military.
If found guilty, he could face up to 20 years in prison.
