Bill Maher takes aim at Trump over Iran peace deal

Comedian Bill Maher has critiqued President Donald Trump’s recent ceasefire agreement with Iran, describing it as an attempt to “save face.”

Known for his frequent jabs at the Republican president, Maher took the opportunity during his Friday night show to mock Trump’s ceasefire arrangement with Iran, coinciding with the commencement of peace talks set for today.

During his HBO show “Real Time” on Friday, Maher commented, “This agreement seems to be about saving face by not obliterating everyone in Iran, while pretending the Strait of Hormuz remains open.”

He humorously added, “Although, it’s kind of not. Iran is imposing a toll—$2 million to pass through. Just like Disneyland,” drawing laughter from the audience.

The ongoing conflict with Iran has resulted in the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical channel responsible for the transport of 20 percent of the world’s oil supply. This has been a significant issue for Trump, who demanded during Easter that Iran “open the f**kin’ Strait.”

“It’s all centered around the Strait of Hormuz, the vital passage for our oil supply,” Maher remarked during his show, emphasizing the strategic importance of the waterway.

‘We have a ceasefire. We have a ceasefire, whatever that means. Yes, we came to an agreement with Iran. We agreed to stop bombing them, and they agreed to start being bombed, so, you know, it’s kind of mutual,’ he joked.

However, on Friday, Trump warned the Middle Eastern country to hurriedly come to a peace deal or risk him ending the ceasefire deal with a launch of new attacks.

‘We’re going to find out in about 24 hours. We’re going to know soon,’ Trump told the New York Post after dispatching Vice President JD Vance to Pakistan to lead peace talks.

It’s his latest salvo in a string of ultimatums against the Islamic Republic that has defined the President’s handling of the war.

‘We have a reset going. We’re loading up the ships with the best ammunition, the best weapons ever made – even better than what we did previously, and we blew them apart,’ he said.

‘And if we don’t have a deal, we will be using them, and we will be using them very effectively.’

On Saturday, two US destroyers have passed through the Strait of Hormuz as part of a freedom-of-navigation mission.

It was the first time in six weeks that American warships passed through, according to The Wall Street Journal

The destroyers were not escorting commercial ships.

The transit comes as the US and Iran began face-to-face negotiations on Saturday in Pakistan, days after a fragile, two-week ceasefire was announced.

The White House confirmed the direct nature of the talks.

Iran’s state-run news agency said three-party talks had begun after Iranian preconditions, including a reduction in Israeli strikes on Southern Lebanon, and after US and Iranian officials met separately with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The US delegation is being led by Vance, along with Steve Witkoff, the special envoy, and Jared Kushner, who is President Donald Trump’s son-in-law.

The Iranian delegation is being led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.

The two are discussing how to advance the ceasefire already threatened by deep disagreements and Israel’s continued attacks against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, a terrorist group, in Lebanon.
