Anthropic refuses Pentagon’s new terms, standing firm on lethal autonomous weapons and mass surveillance

The Trump administration has been engaged in a nearly two-month-long dispute with AI company Anthropic, labeling it a “RADICAL LEFT, WOKE COMPANY” filled with “leftwing nut jobs” and branding it a threat to national security. However, recent developments suggest a possible thawing in this icy relationship, thanks to Anthropic’s new cybersecurity-focused model, Claude Mythos Preview.

Tensions between Anthropic and the Pentagon escalated in late February when the company refused to compromise on two key issues: deploying its technology for domestic mass surveillance and using it in fully autonomous lethal weapons without human oversight. Previously, Anthropic’s tech had significant applications within the Department of Defense and was the first to receive clearance for operation on classified military networks. The impasse led to public exchanges of insults on social media, Anthropic’s designation as a “supply chain risk,” a lawsuit challenging that label, and a temporary court order halting the ban.

In an effort to mend fences, Anthropic has been trying to reestablish a positive rapport with the U.S. government, particularly through Mythos Preview. Recent reports indicate that Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s attendance at a White House meeting on Friday might be a step in that direction. Anthropic confirmed this engagement, with spokesperson Max Young stating, “Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei today met with senior administration officials for a productive discussion on how Anthropic and the U.S. government can work together on key shared priorities such as cybersecurity, America’s lead in the AI race, and AI safety.” The meeting underscores Anthropic’s dedication to responsible AI development and collaboration with the U.S. government.

Mythos Preview, announced with significant enthusiasm, boasts capabilities such as identifying security vulnerabilities in nearly every major web browser and operating system. Billed as Anthropic’s most powerful model to date, it is currently available only for private access. The model is designed to highlight critical vulnerabilities in widely-used internet infrastructure, enabling companies like Apple, Nvidia, and JPMorgan Chase—already onboard—to address these issues before they are exploited by malicious actors. The launch of Mythos Preview has reportedly prompted emergency meetings between U.S. banking leaders and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell.

The Trump administration appears to be taking notice of these developments. In a statement regarding Mythos Preview, Anthropic revealed it has been in “ongoing discussions with U.S. government officials about Claude Mythos Preview and its offensive and defensive cyber capabilities.” When queried by The Verge for more details, Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s head of product management, confirmed the company had briefed senior U.S. government officials about Mythos, reinforcing its commitment to collaboration with various government levels, though specific names were not disclosed.

Further fueling speculation of a potential agreement between Anthropic and the White House, the company reportedly hired Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm with ties to Trump. This move has sparked additional reports suggesting a deal might be on the horizon.

On Friday, Axios reported that Amodei was scheduled for a meeting with White House chief of staff Susie Wiles later that day. Describing the reasons for the meeting, a source familiar with the negotiations said “it would be grossly irresponsible for the U.S. government to deprive itself of the technological leaps that the new model presents” and that “it would be a gift to China.” The outlet also reported that “some parts of the U.S. intelligence community, plus the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA, part of Homeland Security)” are testing Mythos Preview, and that other departments and agencies are interested.

If Amodei’s meeting opens up conversations about further integrating Anthropic’s Claude into government usage across agencies, it’s possible that the DoD could shift its views on Claude accordingly as well. It would be an anticlimactic end to a bitter fight over national security — but hardly the first time the administration has suddenly reversed course.
