China warns against travelling to US after scholars accosted

China’s foreign ministry has issued a warning to citizens travelling to the US, warning of “malicious questioning” at the border.

Travelers have been specifically advised to steer clear of the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. This caution comes after an incident involving about 20 Chinese scholars who recently arrived at the airport with valid visas to attend an academic conference. According to a statement by China Consular Affairs on social media platform X, these scholars were subjected to what was described as “unreasonable inspections” by Customs and Border Protection officials and were ultimately denied entry into the United States.

The Australian government’s travel advisory platform, Smartraveller, does not currently discourage travel to the United States. Instead, it recommends that Australians exercise “normal safety precautions” when visiting. The advisory highlights that while entry requirements are stringent, U.S. authorities possess broad discretion in determining eligibility for entry. They may declare individuals inadmissible for various reasons under U.S. law.

Smartraveller advises prospective travelers to thoroughly review U.S. entry, registration, transit, and exit requirements. Whether traveling on a visa or through the Visa Waiver Program, it is crucial to fully comprehend all pertinent terms and conditions before attempting to enter the country.

Meanwhile, Australians planning trips to China are encouraged to “exercise a high degree of caution,” reflecting ongoing travel advisories and the geopolitical climate. This cautionary stance underscores the varying levels of vigilance required depending on the international destination.

“Check US entry, registration, transit and exit requirements. Whether you’re travelling on a visa or under the Visa Waiver Program, ensure you understand all relevant terms and conditions before attempting to enter the United States.”

Australians travelling to China are advised to “exercise a high degree of caution”.

“As previously advised, authorities have detained foreigners on the grounds of ‘endangering national security’,” the entry reads.

“Australians may be at risk of arbitrary detention, exit bans or harsh enforcement of local laws, including broadly defined National Security Laws.”
