US Delegation Set to Join High-Stakes Iran Talks in Qatar

The United States is expected to resume negotiations with Iran in Qatar as diplomats work to prevent another war, even as reports warn that President Trump could authorize fresh military action shortly after Tuesday’s midterm elections.

Qatari outlet Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported that Washington and Tehran had reached tentative understandings on Iran’s nuclear activities and the Strait of Hormuz, where a US naval force has been escorting oil tankers.

The emerging framework also reportedly offers Tehran “financial incentives,” according to the Times of Israel.

The latest diplomatic effort followed 12 hours of talks in Tehran on Friday, where Qatari mediators sought to ease tensions and prevent another escalation, Axios reported. The mediators also maintained “regular contact” with the White House throughout the discussions, according to the outlet.

Still, a collapse in the negotiations could send the two countries back toward open conflict. The most recent US attack on Iran took place in September.

Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei cautioned Washington against launching another strike in a Telegram post published Saturday.

“If the enemies once again launch military or terrorist attacks, it is the armed forces of the Islamic Republic and the Iranian nation that will determine the time and conditions for ending them,” he wrote.

Khamenei also vowed a “geographically unrestricted response,” raising concerns that US allies throughout the region could again become targets, as happened after American and Israeli strikes in February.

Under a preliminary draft agreement, Iran could move its stockpile of highly enriched uranium to a mutually approved third country, Al Arabiya reported.

The proposal would also require the Strait of Hormuz to reopen within seven days of an initial agreement. China and Russia could potentially serve as guarantors of the deal’s implementation, according to the report.

Trump, who is spending Saturday at Mar-a-Lago, said during a radio interview Friday that the war would “end soon,” though he did not explain what that meant.

A previous tentative agreement between the United States and Iran, negotiated with help from mediators in June, broke down within weeks.

The Post has requested comment from the White House.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, raised concerns this week about potential US action against Iran. In a post on X, he wrote: “Trump is reportedly planning to restart war with Iran after the election. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane.”
