An “atrocious” assault has been reported on two individuals dedicated to feeding stray cats in Western Sydney.

According to the Community Helping Campbelltown Cats charity, one of the volunteers was rendered unconscious during the incident.

The group detailed that the confrontation occurred while one of their members was attending to a colony of 15 stray cats. The situation escalated when a man arrived in a vehicle.

“The colony manager was in the process of feeding the cats and cleaning up when two colleagues happened by and stopped for a chat,” the charity shared via Facebook.

The exchange quickly turned confrontational when the colony manager was questioned about continuing to feed the cats.

“The two male colleagues stepped in to defend the colony manager and were brutally assaulted, leaving one with a head injury and unconscious,” the charity reported.

The post said the charity is “devastated” and said there is “no easy solution” to helping unowned cats due to a lack of money and support.

Police confirmed they were called to the street in Ingleburn following reports of an assault at 11.30pm on Friday night.

“A 33-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman had been assaulted by an unknown man, who had left before the arrival of police,” police said.

He was white, 185cm to 190cm tall, aged in his 30s, with brown hair and a brown beard.

He was wearing navy shorts and a teal singlet and was in a gold Nissan Patrol with NSW registration DI21XU.

NSW Ambulance confirmed they attended on Friday night and two people were taken to Campbelltown Hospital.

Police are appealing for CCTV or dashcam. 9News.com.au has contacted the charity.

It is raising money to try and get the cats off the streets.
