Dezi Freeman's hideout: Inside Australia's most infamous shipping container

Footage captured from within a shipping container typically doesn’t spark much interest, yet this particular video, marked with a shaky watermark, has done just that. Shot by a YouTuber and now under scrutiny due to a trespassing investigation, these images provide the public’s first glimpse inside the container itself.

In the shadow of a 35-hectare property in Victoria’s High Country, shirts believed to belong to the alleged cop killer, Dezi Freeman, still hang by the container’s entrance. Outside, an overturned boat bears the scars of bullet holes, remnants from the firefight with police that claimed Freeman’s life late last month.

The scene inside is chaotic—cushions are piled haphazardly, surrounded by boxes, buckets, and shelves cluttered with various items typical of a shed’s contents. Yet, amid this disarray, traces of habitation are evident: a weathered heater, scattered blankets, a box of rice crackers, Ugg boots, and a cluster of car batteries seemingly connected to a generator and solar panels positioned outside.

An overturned boat just outside the shipping container appears riddled with bullet holes sustained as Freeman was gunned down in a firefight with police late last month.

It’s a messy picture, with cushions stacked up in a big pile, boxes, buckets and shelves covered in the sort of things you might expect to find in a shed.

But there are also signs of someone apparently living there: an old heater, blankets, a rice cracker box, Ugg boots and a stack of car batteries apparently hooked up to a generator and solar panels outside.

Methylated spirits, vitamins, a notepad and pen and some tissues sit on a table in the corner of the container.

In one wall there’s a huge hole apparently caused when the police BearCat pushed a nozzle through to gas Freeman out.

There’s an old brown couch, a hand-wound AM/FM radio, a stick blender hanging from a wall and a bunch of other stuff that can only really be described as rubbish.

YouTube channel The Chaos Chronicles published the video on April 16 and it has since racked up more than 60,000 views.

Victoria Police tonight confirmed it was investigating a report of trespass at the Murray River Road property in Thologolong on that date.

“Investigators are aware of a video posted online in relation to the trespass and are investigating the circumstances,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

“The investigation remains ongoing.”

The man in the video says he sent his drone up to have a look and was “sticking to the rules” but when it crashed on the property he decided to get it back.

“So obviously, after the drone crashed, I had to go in there to retrieve it, especially because it crashed right in a very dry tree,” he says.

“I was absolutely overwhelmed with concern that it might start a fire, so I had to go and retrieve the drone.”

He later adds: “We’re here getting the real footage now. Don’t worry about the drone footage.”

Police say Freeman killed Senior Constable Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart on a property in Porepunkah, about 90 kilometres south-east of Thologolong, in August last year.

He fled into the bush, sparking a massive manhunt that only came to an end with his death last month.

A date for an inquest is yet to be announced.
