Israeli soldiers caught smashing Jesus statue sentenced to 30 days in prison

In response to international condemnation, two Israeli soldiers have been disciplined after being involved in the desecration of a religious symbol in southern Lebanon. The soldiers, who vandalized a figure of Jesus Christ and captured the act on camera, have been relieved of their combat roles and sentenced to 30 days in military detention, according to official reports.

The incident, which took place at a small shrine in Debel, involved the destruction of a statue of Jesus on a crucifix using a sledgehammer. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) swiftly addressed the situation, emphasizing their regret and clarifying their operational focus. “The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident and emphasizes that its operations in Lebanon are directed solely against the Hezbollah terrorist organization and other terrorist groups, and not against Lebanese civilians,” the military stated.

The IDF has removed the soldier responsible for damaging the statue and the one who documented the act from combat duties, imposing a month-long military detention on both. This decisive action underscores the IDF’s commitment to maintaining discipline and respect for religious symbols, even amidst complex operational environments.

Furthermore, six additional soldiers who were present during the incident have been reprimanded for their inaction. They are required to present their accounts to IDF officials, with their commanders set to determine appropriate disciplinary measures. This move reflects the IDF’s intention to uphold accountability and ensure such incidents do not recur.

Along with the pair, six additional soldiers were reprimanded for standing by and failing to stop or even report the incident, according to the Israeli military.

The six soldiers are set to speak before IDF officials to explain themselves, with their punishment set to be determined by their commanders.

Following reports of the incident, the IDF worked with the local community in Debel to replace the broken statue with a new crucifix that is now standing at the shrine.

“The IDF expresses deep regret over the incident, and is working to ensure that it does not happen again in the future,” the Israeli military said.

The Jewish state was on damage control after images of the IDF soldiers damaging the crucifix went viral on Monday, garnering condemnation from officials around the world, including Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel.

Both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the soldiers’ actions and vowed swift consequences against the perpetrators.
