Authorities in Mexico City have initiated an extensive search for a woman accused of murdering her daughter-in-law, a former beauty queen, in a shocking incident captured on video.
Erika Maria “N,” as identified in media reports, became a fugitive soon after the fatal shooting of 27-year-old Carolina Flores Gomez on April 15. Gomez, a former Miss Teen Universe, was allegedly targeted out of jealousy over her relationship with Maria’s son, according to the newspaper El Universal.
The disturbing footage, recorded inside Gomez’s luxurious residence in Polanco—an elite neighborhood in Mexico City—depicts the beauty queen from Baja California heading to the back of the house to fetch a glass of water for her mother-in-law.
The video then shows Maria trailing Gomez, followed by the sound of six gunshots ringing out.
A few moments later, Alejandro Gomez, the victim’s husband, enters the scene carrying their infant. He confronts his mother, questioning why she committed the shooting.
In response, the alleged perpetrator says, “She made me angry. You’re mine and she stole you.”
Police said Alejandro Gomez didn’t report the incident until the following day. By then, his mother, identified as the prime suspect, had fled the house and was on the run.
She’s now the subject of an arrest warrant.
According to the Spanish-language news outlet Debate, a close friend of the slain beauty said the victim had been hounded by her mother-in-law since she became pregnant.
“How’s it going with her?” the friend said she once asked her.
“Ay, she doesn’t like me,” Flores Gomez reportedly answered. “I don’t know, she’s never liked me. Since I became pregnant it has gotten worse, she agitates me a lot.”
The high-profile case has rattled the North American nation, sparking a demonstration in Mexico’s Baja California over the weekend demanding justice for the victim.
Flores Gomez won the Miss Teen Universe title for Baja in 2017.
