NEW YORK — Aviation in the Big Apple is set to soar to new levels, as groundbreaking technology is now being trialed at John F. Kennedy International Airport.
This past Monday marked a milestone with the launch of an innovative electric air taxi from JFK Airport. Developed by Joby Aviation, this state-of-the-art helicopter boasts a vertical take-off capability while maintaining an exceptionally low noise profile.
Remarkably, this aircraft is said to be 100 times quieter than conventional helicopters. It can comfortably accommodate four passengers and a pilot, with additional space available for luggage.
Joby Aviation is in the process of securing certification from the Federal Aviation Administration to deploy this aircraft as an urban air taxi. The aim is to transport passengers from JFK to their destinations across the city in just seven minutes.
The air taxi will navigate between JFK and various points within the city’s existing heliport infrastructure, including the Downtown Skyport and heliports located on West 30th Street and East 34th Street in Midtown.
The Port Authority emphasized that Monday’s demonstration underscores its dedication to enhancing safety and embracing innovation in aviation.
“We operate some of the busiest airports in the world, and with that comes a responsibility to think seriously about what aviation looks like in the decades ahead for our passengers, for our communities, and for the environment,” Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia said. “This demonstration flight is one data point in a larger body of work we’re building around next-generation electric aviation, and it reflects our conviction that responsible exploration of these technologies now is how we prepare this region for the future.”
Officials say down the line, the sky is the limit.
“Time-sensitive organ transplant deliveries could take minutes not hours,” Garcia said.
The goal for Joby Aviation is to debut in New York sometime within the next year.
