A highly unusual sighting has emerged on Long Island, where a rare pair of breeding deer was recently observed, as reported by local news outlets.
This captivating duo, featuring a piebald buck and doe, was discovered in the Long Island Pine Barrens located in Suffolk County, according to Pix11. Piebald deer, recognized by their distinctive patches of white and brown fur, owe their unique appearance to a rare genetic condition. Such markings are seen in just about 1% of the white-tailed deer population, based on findings from the Southeast Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study.
Since December, at least one of these uniquely patterned deer, distinguished by its predominantly white coat adorned with small dark spots, has been documented through a series of photographs taken in an eastern Long Island backyard, as reported by Newsday.
“I was genuinely surprised when I first caught sight of it,” shared local resident Logan K in an interview with CBS New York earlier this month. “It was fascinating to recognize what it was.”
