White House REJECTS Elon Musk's offer to pay TSA workers' salaries

In a recent development, the White House has declined Elon Musk’s substantial offer of $250 million intended to cover the salaries of TSA workers during the ongoing partial government shutdown. The administration gave the proposal considerable thought but ultimately decided against accepting it due to potential legal complications. The shutdown, now stretching into its sixth week, has left numerous Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employees, including those in the TSA, without pay. This situation arose after a Democratic block on a GOP bill meant to fund the department. Musk, known as the world’s richest individual, made his offer public on X, stating his desire to alleviate the financial strain on TSA employees across the nation. Despite President Trump expressing his approval of the offer, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson explained to the Daily Mail, “We greatly appreciate Elon’s generous offer, but his involvement in federal government contracts presents significant legal challenges.”

Fund the Department

Jackson emphasized that the quickest solution for TSA and all DHS employees to receive their paychecks is for Democrats to approve the funding for the Department of Homeland Security. The Democratic opposition stems from their demands for reforms to President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, which are enforced by DHS agencies like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection. This political deadlock has led to a wave of TSA resignations, extended security wait times, and ICE agents stepping in to perform TSA duties, as directed by President Trump to mitigate airport disruptions. Although Musk’s offer was seriously considered, concerns about potential conflicts of interest due to his business ties with the government were significant factors in the decision.

$38 Billion in Contracts

Should Musk have proceeded with paying TSA salaries, it would likely have sparked legal disputes because of his extensive federal contracts through his companies, Tesla and SpaceX. Meanwhile, the White House remains hopeful that the shutdown will conclude soon, as the widespread impact on airports is pushing Congress to rethink their negotiation strategies. The shutdown, which began on February 14, threatens to deprive TSA workers of their second full paycheck if a resolution is not reached within the week. Although initially supportive, President Trump’s enthusiasm for Musk’s offer was overruled by the legal and procedural hurdles involved. “I’d love it. I think it’s great. Let him do that,” he reportedly said, acknowledging the potential relief it could provide.

Covering TSA workers’ pay would amount to around $250 million, two sources told CBS News. The White House has repeatedly blamed Democrats for playing politics with government workers’ paychecks. The liberal lawmakers have claimed the same about the White House and congressional Republicans. But American voters are narrowly blaming Trump and the GOP for the shutdown, according to the latest Daily Mail/ JL Partners survey released this week. More than a third of respondents cast blame on the Republicans for the long lines and security wait times at US airports.

‘It’s the Democrats who have led to this stalemate over the past six weeks,’ White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Wednesday. ‘The president and the Republicans’ position has been very clear — fund the Department of Homeland Security.’ The TSA administrator said Wednesday that employees have lost an estimated $1 billion in income when combined with the 43-day shutdown in the fall of 2025.
