The $1.75 supermarket drink that banishes acid reflux

With its tangy taste and slight fizziness, kefir is gaining a reputation for being packed with beneficial bacteria. Fans of wellness are increasingly touting it as a panacea for ailments ranging from digestive issues to weakened bones.

Kefir, a fermented milk beverage created with live cultures and yeast, has seen a surge in popularity recently, coinciding with a growing interest in gut health. Supermarkets now offer extensive selections of this yogurt-like drink, and social media influencers champion it as a staple in their daily wellness routines.

In an intriguing development, the Daily Mail recently shared the story of reporter Luke Chafer, whose persistent acid reflux symptoms significantly subsided after he incorporated kefir into his daily diet. This narrative suggests that a simple, affordable probiotic drink might offer relief from heartburn, a prevalent digestive issue troubling many Americans.

The demand for such an effective solution is unmistakable, as more individuals seek natural ways to enhance their digestive health.

The compelling suggestion was that a cheap, easy to obtain probiotic drink could help soothe heartburn – one of America’s most common digestive complaints.

The need for such a solution is clear.

Around one in five people in the US experiences regular acid reflux symptoms, including burning chest pain after eating, sour-tasting regurgitation and throat irritation.

Tens of millions now rely on acid-suppressing medications such as omeprazole and lansoprazole to keep symptoms under control – often for years at a time.

It is tangy, faintly fizzy and packed with billions of so-called ‘good bacteria’ – and wellness fans are increasingly hailing it as a cure-all for everything from poor digestion to brittle bones 

But growing concern about the potential downsides of long-term use of these drugs, including links to nutrient deficiencies, kidney problems and bone fractures, has fuelled interest in alternative and complementary approaches.

So, could kefir really help calm acid reflux – or is it simply the latest wellness fad? The Daily Mail spoke to experts to examine the evidence.

Can kefir really soothe heartburn? 

Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach repeatedly travels upwards into the esophagus – the tube connecting the mouth and stomach – irritating its delicate lining and triggering the familiar burning pain in the chest.

Normally, a muscular valve at the base of the esophagus closes tightly after food passes into the stomach.

But in acid reflux and GERD, that seal weakens or relaxes at the wrong time, allowing acidic stomach contents to wash back upwards.

Doctors typically recommend lifestyle changes first, such as losing weight, avoiding large meals late at night and cutting back on trigger foods including alcohol, spicy dishes and caffeine.

If symptoms persist, many patients are prescribed acid-suppressing drugs such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), including omeprazole and lansoprazole, which reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces.

But is there actually any evidence a fermented drink such as kefir could help?

The answer is, yes. Several major studies that have directly investigated whether fermented milk products more broadly may ease digestive symptoms.

One major meta-analysis, published in 2025 in the journal Nutrition Reviews, examined 21 studies involving fermented milk products, including kefir. Researchers found that just over half reported improvements in at least one gastrointestinal symptom.

These included reductions in abdominal pain and discomfort – including symptoms linked to acid reflux – alongside less bloating, flatulence, constipation and some irritable bowel syndrome symptoms.

Notably, none of the studies included in the review found fermented dairy products had a harmful effect on digestive symptoms.

A second meta-analysis from 2020, which examined 14 clinical trials involving fermented milk products and probiotic supplements, also suggested they could help ease reflux-related problems.

Eleven of the studies – nearly 80 per cent – reported improvements in at least one GERD symptom, including regurgitation, reflux and heartburn.

Scientists believe one possible explanation is that probiotics may help restore a healthier balance of bacteria in the gut. In turn, this could improve so-called gastric emptying – the speed at which food leaves the stomach – reducing the chances of acidic contents lingering and travelling back up into the esophagus.

What doctors really think about kefir for GERD 

Doctors say the early evidence is intriguing – but stress kefir is far from a proven cure for heartburn.

Dr Amar Rewari, a radiation oncologist at Luminis Health in Maryland, told the Daily Mail: ‘Kefir is interesting in that it contains probiotics that may support gut health, but the evidence specifically for it helping to ease heartburn is pretty limited.

‘I definitely have patients who take it, and they say it helps them, but it is not a proven treatment.’

He said fermented foods may help some people indirectly by easing bloating and improving how quickly the stomach empties after eating – potentially lowering the risk of acid travelling back up into the esophagus.

But he warned kefir could actually worsen symptoms in others.

‘Those are people who are sensitive to high-acid or high-fat foods, or dairy, where it could cause more bloating, raising the risk of reflux,’ he explained.

Dietitian Whitney Stuart, who is based in Texas, said kefir was increasingly attracting attention from digestive health specialists because of its unusually rich mix of bacteria and yeasts.

‘Kefir is one of the most promising probiotic foods for improving digestive health, and there is growing evidence supporting its potential role in managing reflux, although research is still developing,’ she told the Daily Mail.

‘It can be a helpful complementary treatment, especially for individuals whose reflux is caused by gut issues.’

Experts say this may be because kefir appears to help support the gut microbiome – the vast ecosystem of bacteria living in the digestive tract that scientists now believe plays a major role in everything from immunity to inflammation and digestion.

However, they stress that anyone suffering persistent heartburn should still seek medical advice, particularly if symptoms are severe, frequent or accompanied by difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss or chest pain.

Should you try kefir instead of heartburn medication? 

Despite the hype surrounding kefir, Dr Rewari said he would still urge patients to focus on tried-and-tested strategies first when attempting to control heartburn.

‘Oftentimes, first of all, I tell patients to take care of some of the things that may be contributing to their acid reflux,’ he said.

‘So, that means not eating meals very late at night, weight loss, limiting their alcohol intake, and changing their sleep position.

‘Those can all help to ease heartburn. Other than that, I would prescribe medications.’

Doctors also often advise patients with nighttime reflux to sleep on their left-hand side, which positions the stomach lower than the esophagus and may help reduce the risk of acid flowing upwards during sleep.

Stuart agreed that kefir should be viewed as an additional tool rather than a replacement for conventional treatment, describing it as a ‘complementary treatment’ that may help alongside medications and lifestyle changes designed to ease acid reflux symptoms.

When heartburn could be a sign of something serious 

Occasional acid reflux after a heavy meal is common and usually nothing to worry about. Symptoms can include a burning sensation in the chest, a sour taste in the mouth, bloating and regurgitation after eating.

But doctors warn that when these symptoms become frequent – typically more than twice a week for several weeks – it may signal Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, a chronic condition in which stomach acid repeatedly damages the lining of the esophagus.

According to Dr Rewari, certain symptoms should be treated as major warning signs.

‘If you’re vomiting blood, or have black stools, or your reflux continues despite you taking these over-the-counter treatments, I would call that a red flag,’ he said.

‘If you’re waking up regularly in the middle of the night because of it, or losing weight, or having difficulty swallowing, that would also be a warning sign.’

Over time, uncontrolled acid reflux can lead to Barrett’s esophagus – a condition in which repeated exposure to stomach acid damages and changes the cells lining the esophagus.

Doctors consider Barrett’s esophagus particularly concerning because it significantly increases the risk of esophageal cancer, a disease diagnosed in around 22,000 Americans every year. Cases have been rising steadily in recent decades, particularly among middle-aged and older adults.
