A tense pursuit in DeLand, Florida, culminated in a tragic event early Saturday morning when a driver was fatally shot by a deputy. This incident unfolded in the parking lot of a Walmart Neighborhood Market, according to reports from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.

The sequence of events began the previous evening when local police attempted to intercept a reckless driver who had narrowly avoided hitting a pedestrian in downtown DeLand. Despite efforts to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away, disregarding road safety by turning off the headlights and running red lights, as they headed west on State Road 44.

Authorities, determined to apprehend the suspect, tracked the vehicle to the Walmart Neighborhood Market on South Woodland Boulevard at around 4:30 a.m. As deputies moved in to make contact, the situation escalated when the driver made another attempt to escape by accelerating.

In a dramatic turn, a deputy discharged a firearm, shooting through the vehicle’s windshield and hitting the driver, as confirmed in a social media update from the sheriff’s office on Saturday morning.

The incident underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face and raises questions about the circumstances that led to the use of deadly force. The investigation is ongoing, and the community awaits further details from the authorities on this unfortunate event.

“One deputy fired a shot through the windshield, striking the driver,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a social media post Saturday morning.

Investigators say the vehicle continued a short distance through the parking lot before crashing.

The driver was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported.

As of Saturday morning, the shopping center parking lot remained closed and surrounded by crime scene tape.

A spokesperson for the Volusia Sheriff’s Office told News 6 investigators are now reviewing body camera footage and other video connected to the shooting.

“At this point I don’t expect further updates until we are able to download and review body camera + any other available footage,” the spokesperson said in a message to News 6. “It may be Monday when we put that all together and provide a more comprehensive update.”

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is expected to investigate the deputy-involved shooting.
