Retired NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb will jointly lead a review into the Northern Territory’s child protection system, sparked by the alleged murder of five-year-old Alice Springs girl, Kumanjayi Little Baby.

Greg Shanahan, a veteran public servant from the Northern Territory, will collaborate with her to lead the review.

The Northern Territory government announced the appointments this morning, at the same time outlining the scope of the review.

“In our nation, too many town camps and remote communities have been shrouded in silence for far too long—a silence born out of fear, fear of offending, and fear of being branded as racist,” she expressed to Parliament.

“This silence is suffocating our vulnerable children, and it is having fatal consequences for our young ones.”

Senator Price also criticized what she termed a “hands-off culture” within certain factions of the child protection system, suggesting that ideological and political concerns have overshadowed the primary focus of ensuring children’s welfare.
