Apple aims to set itself apart in the AI landscape by leveraging its strong privacy record, potentially gaining some leeway as it trails behind competitors. As reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the upcoming, more conversational version of Siri in iOS 27 will feature an option to automatically delete chat histories. Users can choose to retain conversations for 30 days, a year, or indefinitely, which starkly contrasts with other leading platforms that typically only support temporary incognito modes, if available at all.
Apple seems to be banking on users prioritizing privacy over convenience, especially as concerns about AI grow. The company is integrating Google’s Gemini technology to update many of its system components. Yet, it appears Apple is attempting to transform some of its AI’s perceived shortcomings into a unique advantage. As Gurman highlights:
Most leading AI chatbots today rely heavily on histories and memory systems to personalize responses and improve future interactions. But Apple will place tighter limits around how memory works, including restrictions on what information can persist and how long i can be retained.
