A tragic incident occurred in Midtown on Monday night when a woman lost her life after falling into an exposed manhole, authorities reported.
The 56-year-old woman, a resident of Westchester County, had just exited her parked Mercedes-Benz SUV at approximately 11:20 p.m. The incident took place near the Cartier and Nike stores at the intersection of E. 52nd Street and 5th Avenue.
Officials stated that she fell approximately 10 feet into the utility hole.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and found the woman unconscious and unresponsive at the bottom of the open Con Edison manhole, according to police.
Once she was retrieved from the manhole, she was immediately transported to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Sadly, she succumbed to her injuries at the hospital.
The authorities are withholding the victim’s name until her family members have been notified.
Con Edison said it is investigating why the hole was not covered.
“We are deeply saddened to confirm that a member of the public has died after falling into an open manhole,” a spokesperson for the utility company told The Post.
“We are actively investigating how this occurred. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family, and safety remains our top priority.”
The medical examiner will determine the woman’s cause of death, police said.
