APOPKA, Fla. – In the world of boxing, Christy Martin has been synonymous with strength and resilience. Hailing from Apopka, her legacy stretches beyond the ring, as she has been a trailblazer for women in the sport for decades.
Today, Martin’s battles have taken on a new form. She has redirected her passion and tenacity toward advocating for those affected by domestic violence. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed, earning her the prestigious Purple Ribbon Award as “Survivor of the Year.”
This accolade comes from DomesticShelter.org, an organization committed to providing essential services and resources to those in need.
Back in 2010, Martin survived a harrowing attack by her then-husband in their Apopka residence, where she was both stabbed and shot. Her recovery became a turning point, inspiring her to dedicate herself to helping others facing similar struggles. She established “Christy’s Champs,” a non-profit organization, and actively participates in the Wings Program, which seeks to eradicate domestic violence.
In February, Christy organized a charity boxing event at the Altamonte Springs Hilton, with all proceeds supporting the Safehouse of Seminole and the Animal Safehouse Project of Brevard, further demonstrating her commitment to making a difference.
Christy also hosted a fight card in February at the Altamonte Springs Hilton, with proceeds benefitting Safehouse of Seminole and Animal Safehouse Project of Brevard.
Christy visited News 6 to talk with Sports Director Jamie Seh. You can watch that interview at the top of this story.
