Apopka Officials Consider 32% Property Tax Hike as State Deadline Looms

City commission holds special meeting Monday as Friday deadline looms

APOPKA, Fla. – Apopka officials are expected to take up a major property tax proposal Monday night, with city leaders considering a 32% increase after commissioners were unable to settle on a final rate just days earlier.

Under the plan, the city’s millage rate would rise by 0.75, bringing in an estimated $6.6 million in additional revenue. For the owner of a $300,000 home, that would add roughly $187 to the annual property tax bill.

Commissioner Nadia Anderson was the lone member of the Apopka City Commission to vote against the proposed increase earlier this month. Anderson said she intended to bring residents’ concerns into the discussion, even if those concerns came in by phone shortly before the meeting began.

Other commissioners have indicated they support the budget connected to the higher tax rate.

The city faces a Friday deadline to establish the millage rate. Monday’s special commission meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., with a final vote on the budget set for Sept. 3.

The debate comes as Florida voters prepare to weigh a statewide property tax amendment on the November ballot, a measure that could have a significant impact on future revenue for municipalities such as Apopka.
