Woman shot dead outside Sheffield bar was young mother on a night out

The tragic image of a young mother’s life cut short in a suspected gangland misfire has emerged, casting a somber shadow over the vibrant nightlife of Sheffield. Shanice Brookes, a 30-year-old digital creator and photographer, was the victim of this devastating incident early Monday morning.

Ms. Brookes, known for her creative flair and dedication to youth work over the past five years, was out enjoying an evening with friends when the unthinkable occurred. Reports suggest she was seated near the intended target of the gangsters, individuals she was allegedly acquainted with, when gunshots rang out around 2:45 a.m.

According to South Yorkshire Police, Ms. Brookes was an innocent bystander who simply happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Authorities have released a CCTV image of a white Audi, which they suspect was involved in the drive-by shooting, in hopes of gaining leads in their investigation.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene outside One Four One on West Street, in the heart of Sheffield. There, they found Ms. Brookes with grave injuries. Despite the efforts of officers and paramedics, she tragically succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital.

Shanice, who has also worked as a child and youth worker for the past five years was treated by officers and paramedics – but sadly later died in hospital.

A relative told the Daily Mail: ‘Shanice was an innocent woman – she leaves behind a little boy. We are devastated.’

Friends took to social media to commiserate amidst their loss, with one stating: ‘my life will never be the same’.

One neighbour told the Daily Mail: ‘She was beautiful. She always helped take my shopping in. She had a beautiful son and was just about to graduate.’

Indeed, her LinkedIn shows she had been studying photography, videography and graphic design for a three-year bachelor’s degree at The Sheffield College since September 2023 and was due to finish this month.

A 30-year-old man and a woman, 32, were arrested on Tuesday in Stockport along with another 30-year-old man who was taken into custody in Sheffield following the incident.

All three of the suspects are being held as officers from South Yorkshire Police continue their investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the shooting has been urged to come forward.

A large police presence remained at the scene on West Street, home to many of the city’s most popular bars, throughout Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Superintendent Jamie Henderson, the district commander for Sheffield, said: ‘Following extensive inquiries over the last 36 hours, we believe the victim was an innocent bystander who was on a night out in our city to celebrate the bank holiday weekend.

‘Gun crime causes devastation within families and communities.

‘In this case, an innocent woman who should have been able to safely enjoy a night out in Sheffield has been killed, and her loved ones have been left to face the heartbreaking reality that they will never see her again.

‘While we are doing everything we can, we need our communities to work with us in helping us to find illegal guns and those who intend to use them.’

The force released a photo from CCTV footage at the scene showing a white Audi they believe was involved in the killing.

Mr Henderson added: ‘We need your help.

‘We know that West Street and Eldon Street were both busy at the time of this incident, and there were people who saw what happened who haven’t come forward yet.’
