Democrats failing to win over Latino voters souring on Trump: poll

Latino backing for the Democratic Party remains unchanged, even though President Trump has seen a drop in his support from this crucial voter demographic in the 2024 election, according to a recent poll.

An UnidosUS poll surveying 3,000 registered Hispanic voters revealed that 54% intend to vote for Democratic candidates in the upcoming House elections, while 27% lean towards Republicans, and 19% are yet to decide.

This 54% mirrors the proportion of Hispanic voters who supported Democratic House candidates in 2024, as highlighted by a CBS News exit poll.

The 2024 exit poll indicated a significant drop in Latino support for Democratic House hopefuls compared to earlier election cycles.

In previous races, Democrats secured 60% of the Latino vote in the 2022 House elections, 63% in 2020, and 69% in 2018, according to reports.

Despite 25% of Hispanic voters who previously supported Trump expressing reluctance to do so again, UnidosUS, a Latino advocacy and civil rights organization, found that enthusiasm for Democrats has not grown.

Among Latinos that backed Trump in 2024, 25% said they either “probably would not vote for Trump again” or were “certain” they would not if they “had to do it over again.”

However the vast majority (75%) were inclined to still vote for Trump in that scenario.

The poll, conducted between April 27 and May 14, also found that 60% of Latinos said they have a “very favorable” or “somewhat favorable” opinion of congressional Democrats, while 31% declared a “somewhat unfavorable” or “very unfavorable” opinion.

In contrast, only 34% viewed congressional Republicans favorably, while 58% held an unfavorable opinion.

In the battle for the Texas US Senate seat, one of the biggest midterm races this cycle, Democratic candidate James Talarico registered more support from Lone Star State Latinos than Republican candidate Ken Paxton, the pollster found.

Some 51% of Texas Latinos are either planning or leaning toward voting for Talarico, whereas 24% favor Paxton. Another 18% remain undecided.

The poll was conducted before Paxton’s victory Tuesday night in the GOP primary runoff.
