CNN's Tapper: House Dems Haven't Given 'Cohesive Plan' to Legislate if They Win Majority

During Tuesday’s edition of CNN’s “The Lead,” host Jake Tapper said House Democrats have yet to offer voters a unified legislative agenda should the party regain control of the chamber in the midterm elections.

Questioning Rep. Don Davis (D-NC), Tapper noted that many observers expect Democrats could win the House and asked what their top legislative priority would be. He also pressed Davis on how the party would advance its agenda while facing the possibility that President Donald Trump could either sign the legislation or veto it. “What’s number one?” Tapper asked.

Davis said the message he is hearing from Americans across the political spectrum centers on affordability, rising expenses and basic economic survival. He pointed to seventh-generation farmers worried about keeping their family operations afloat, as well as commercial fishermen struggling with soaring fuel prices. Davis argued that lawmakers in the 120th Congress must remain focused on reducing costs and addressing the financial pressures facing families, farmers and workers. He cautioned that politicians would be failing their constituents if they talked about affordability during campaign season but pursued different priorities after taking office.
