Cold case cracked as Illinois suspect charged in brutal 1993 killing of mother found slain in field

Three decades have passed since the tragic murder of an Illinois mother, but on Tuesday, authorities revealed a breakthrough. A 70-year-old man now faces charges, bringing hope for justice in a case that has long troubled both the community and the victim’s loved ones.

Albert L. Zigler, a resident of Caseyville, Illinois, has been charged with first-degree murder for the 1993 slaying of Randy Gail Sperino, who was just 34 at the time of her death.

Back in 1993, Sperino’s life was brutally ended when she was beaten to death, with her remains left in a field in the rural area of unincorporated Granite City, Illinois.

Although DNA evidence was collected from the crime scene, it initially yielded no matches in the national Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), as reported by KMOV, a local news outlet. However, a recent analysis by Othram, a genealogy company based in Texas, has identified Zigler as the suspect.

Despite the passage of more than three decades, investigators said sufficient evidence was developed to support the charges against Zigler.

Wes Sperino, Randy Sperino’s son, told the outlet he never thought an arrest would be made.

“I thought I might pass and never know, but that all changed thanks to these guys behind me and to my side,” Wes Sperino said. “I was ecstatic and then I had immediate tears of joy, and I was just shocked that I was hearing the words of, ‘We got him.’”
