Spoiler Alert: “Marshals” Season 1, Episode 13 — “Wolves at the Door”
Kayce Dutton (played by Luke Grimes) appears to maintain a connection with his sister Beth (portrayed by Kelly Reilly), but this link seems to be subtly woven into the storyline through a new character. In a recent episode, Kayce’s latest love interest, Dolly Weaver (Ellyn Jameson), reveals that she and her notoriously dangerous father, Tom (Chris Mulkey), hail from Texas. Tom takes young Tate (Brecken Merrill) on a biplane adventure for bass fishing in Texas, but Dolly expresses reluctance about returning to her home state. “Who cares about Texas?” she remarks to Tom. “My heart’s in Montana.”
This tie to Texas is significant, as it’s where Beth and her family have relocated, focusing on cattle and beef sales after a wildfire devastated their Montana ranch, as depicted in the “Yellowstone” spin-off “Dutton Ranch.” While Kayce has yet to delve into his sister’s new Texan life, he has only alluded to his dispersed family in “Marshals.” His reflections have predominantly centered on the lasting impact of his late father, John Dutton (Kevin Costner), on his life’s trajectory. The possibility that Dolly might have a connection to Beth could introduce dramatic shifts in Kayce’s current law-abiding existence.
On her end, Beth has also hinted at her Montana roots in “Dutton Ranch.” Her discussions have revolved around building a legacy and the struggle to preserve her and Rip’s (Cole Hauser) hard-earned gains. Despite these references, mentions of John and the rest of the Dutton family have been sparse.
Yet, a notable mention surfaced recently. “You remind me of my father’s attorney. It’s not ideal,” Beth told her rival Beulah Jackson’s son, Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba), in Episode 3, “Act of God Business.” This comment nods to her father’s lawyer, her adoptive brother Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), whom she famously killed in the “Yellowstone” series finale—potentially foreshadowing a grim fate for Joaquin.
Beth has referenced her Montana past in Dutton Ranch
A reunion between Kayce and Beth would likely be a heartfelt affair. However, with Beth’s penchant for unconventional methods and Kayce’s commitment as a U.S. Marshal, any crossover involving the siblings is bound to stir significant drama.
One did arrive very recently, however. “You remind me of my father’s attorney. It’s not ideal,” she declared to nemesis Beulah Jackson’s son Joaquin (Juan Pabla Raba) during Episode 3, “Act of God Business.” Her father’s lawyer, of course, was her eternal enemy and adopted brother Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), whom she killed during the “Yellowstone” series finale, which may be an ominous portent for Joaquin’s future as well.
Any reunion between Kayce and Beth would presumably be much sweeter — but since Beth’s never been an adherent of the straight and narrow path and Kayce is now a full-fledged U.S. Marshal, expect some major waves between the sibs if we ever get a crossover.
