NYPD investigating after surveillance video captures group entering sewers through manholes

Authorities in New York City are delving into a peculiar case involving several individuals captured on surveillance footage entering a sewer through a manhole and resurfacing after several hours.

“Today, our team initiated a comprehensive investigation following reports of unauthorized entries into the sewer system located on McDonald Avenue,” the NYPD announced via social media. “The NYPD, alongside other agencies, has completed its examination, ensuring the area is devoid of any threats or hazards.”

According to PIX 11-TV, the individuals were observed entering the manhole around 11 p.m. on Thursday in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Flatbush, only to reappear at approximately 2 a.m. the following Friday.

The station also reported, with information from police, that another group entered a different manhole on a nearby street, showing a similar pattern in their activities during the same hours.

The police don’t yet know who the sewer explorers were or what they were up to.

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection also did its own inspection, telling Fox News Digital: “DEP has inspected the sewer infrastructure at this location and found no damage to the system.”

The spokesperson warned, “Entering the sewer system is both illegal and extremely dangerous. Sewers can contain numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces. For these reasons, members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall.”
