Mark Ruffalo Endorses Billionaire Tom Steyer for California Governor

Mark Ruffalo, widely recognized for his roles in Disney-Marvel films, has publicly backed billionaire Tom Steyer in the California gubernatorial race, despite his usual criticism of billionaires. The actor expressed his support via an Instagram post, sparking conversation around his decision.

In his post, Ruffalo praised Steyer for his long-standing commitment to combating climate change. He contrasted this with Xavier Becerra, claiming the latter is influenced by major corporations, including Big Oil, which have invested heavily in his campaign. “Tom has dedicated the last two decades to fighting climate change,” Ruffalo stated. “In contrast, Becerra is financially supported by Big Oil and other corporations that have poured nearly $50 million into his election effort.”

While Ruffalo acknowledged his general disapproval of billionaires, stating he believes no one should possess such extreme wealth, he attempted to clarify his stance by differentiating Steyer from what he described as oligarchs. His comments suggest a nuanced view of wealth and power, although they highlight the paradox of using significant wealth to gain political influence.

“I’m not a supporter of billionaires, as I see no justification for such levels of wealth,” Ruffalo explained. “However, I believe there’s a difference between a billionaire and an oligarch. The latter uses their resources to accumulate more power, often through exploitation. Although Tom is a billionaire, I don’t see him as an oligarch like Musk, Thiel, Trump, or Bezos.”

Ruffalo went on to describe Steyer as a progressive candidate committed to serving the interests of Californians rather than his own. He emphasized that Steyer, if elected, would appoint a forward-thinking administration and act as a counterbalance to former President Trump’s policies. Ruffalo also highlighted Steyer’s stance on key issues: advocating for the abolition of ICE, opposing corporate mergers such as those between Paramount and Warner Bros, and supporting increased taxation on the wealthy, including himself. In contrast, Ruffalo noted that Becerra has not endorsed similar measures to tax billionaires.

“Tom is a progressive who will work for the people of California, not to enrich himself or corporations. If elected, he will appoint an administration of people who are progressive and solution-oriented,” he continued. “He will be a bulwark against Trump. Tom is calling for ICE to be abolished and will hold ICE accountable for crimes in California. He is against the corporate merger of Paramount and Warner Bros, and he will work to make Hollywood a thriving industry based in California again. Tom supports taxing the rich (including himself) whereas Becerra has not supported calls to tax billionaires.”

Ruffalo’s hardcore progressive fans expressed disappointment, with many feeling that Steyer’s very status as a billionaire disqualifies him from office.

“This is so disappointing to read from you. Steyer could help millions of people without ever holding office. With his money TODAY. But instead he’s spent $300 million on his presidential run and this governor run. Billionaires should not exist,” said one user.

“Dear Mark, Tom is the perfect example of ‘if he wanted to, he would.’ Steyer doesn’t need the title of governor to do any of the things he claims to want to do, he’s a billionaire!!!” said another user.

“Making promises about ICE doesn’t mean he will actually do anything, or that he actually can. The problem Billionaires Promises, is getting Billionaire results when their Billionaire Friends turn their backs on them,” said another.
