Real estate expert mom and two young daughters stabbed to death

A tragic incident unfolded in a luxury gated community in Florida, where a man reportedly killed a real estate professional and their two daughters before taking his own life.

The horrifying discovery was made on Tuesday when Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies conducted a welfare check at a residence in Doral Isles, South Florida.

Upon arrival, officers found four individuals who had been fatally stabbed.

The victims were identified as Melanie Lauren Hyer, 46, and Ryan Charles Whiten, 42, along with their daughters, Savannah Whiten, 11, and Sienna Whiten, 8.

Authorities are treating the case as a murder-suicide, although the motive behind these tragic events remains unknown.

In an interview, Whiten’s former spouse described the relationship between the couple as “toxic,” citing frequent disputes over their children.

The woman – who broke down in tears while speaking – said she never saw signs of violence between Hyer and Whiten.

‘He was always so sweet with his girls and loved them deeply,’ the ex-wife said. ‘I don’t know what happened.’

Their two daughters – Savannah Whiten, 11, and Sienna Whiten, eight, were also killed

The ex-wife also said Whiten reached out to her three weeks ago, telling her how thankful he was to have her in his life.

Looking back, she said, it appeared as if he was saying goodbye.

Those who knew Hyer, meanwhile, remembered her as a loving mother and a hard worker.

‘She was a beacon of light and was always eager to help out at her school,’ said Doral Mayor Christi Fragga.

‘Any loss of life is difficult to accept, particularly in moments where there are two young girls involved, and I knew their mother,’ she told CBS News Miami. ‘This is hard to accept in a community that is so close.’

The mayor went on to call the murder-suicide ‘a reminder to all of us about the importance of speaking up when there are mental health issues and potentially domestic violence issues because we have so many resources, and [this] is a reminder that you are not alone and we are here to help.’

Former NBC South Florida investigative reporter Willard Shepard also said he was good friends with Hyer.

‘She was an extremely giving person in a professional capacity, she was an expert in the areas of probate, foreclosure, those types of things.’

He recounted that he had last spoken to Hyer about a month and a half ago, and didn’t see any signs ‘something like this’ would happen.

‘And obviously if there was some sign of that, not only would I have said something, but taken some action,’ Shepard said. ‘But there was simply nothing that gave me any indication that this could have potentially occurred.’

The reporter also said he was told by neighbors that the girls had last been seen out riding their bicycles with their father on Sunday.

The two girls were students at Downtown Doral Charter Schools.

‘Our community is mourning the loss of two of our beloved students,’ the school said in a statement. ‘Our heartfelt sympathies are with their families, friends, faculty and staff at our schools. These students will be deeply missed.’

School officials noted that they would help students and staff with their grief.

‘To support our students and staff, the school has arranged to have grief counselors on campus and will continue to provide support as needed,’ they said.

‘We encourage parents to talk openly with their children and closely monitor their wellbeing. Parents with any concerns or in need of additional support should contact the school.’

The daughters were also members of the Doral Field Hockey team, which remembered them in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

‘Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with their family, friends and all those whose lives were touched by them,’ the team posted.

‘They were an important part of our community and will be remembered for their kindness, friendship and the positive impact they had on everyone around them.’
