85-year-old man killed by falling tree in freak accident at NYC park: cops

Tragedy struck in Queens on Saturday night when an 85-year-old pedestrian lost his life after a tree fell on him in a park, as reported by police.

Officers responding to a 911 call at Forest Park around 8:30 p.m. discovered the elderly man unconscious, according to a statement from the police department on Sunday.

The NYPD spokesperson confirmed the man, whose identity remains undisclosed, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are still investigating whether the accident was caused by the severe thunderstorms that had hit the area that night, bringing heavy rain and strong winds that toppled several trees in the park.

Police have launched an investigation to uncover more details about this unfortunate incident.

This accident echoes a previous incident on Memorial Day, where a 49-year-old woman was injured by a falling tree near East 176th Street and Clay Avenue in Mount Hope, the Bronx.

Police attributed the incident to wet weather.

In February, a child and a nun were nearly crushed by a tree that toppled near the Sisters of Life and Sacred Heart Convent in Hell’s Kitchen as Winter Storm Hernando wound down.

Last year, upstate New York twin sisters Emily and Kenni Bisson, both 6, were killed in their sleep when a tree toppled onto their Clark Mills home amid heavy rain and an EF-1 tornado, authorities said.
