Mississippi teen allegedly killed elderly couple in their home before firing on deputies in standoff

A teenager from Mississippi is accused of breaking into an elderly couple’s residence and taking their lives, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement, according to investigators.

Seventeen-year-old Cordarius Hobbs allegedly forced entry into the Mendenhall, Mississippi home of Billy Blair, 74, and his wife Virginia Carol Blair, 71, and fatally attacked them on June 3, as reported by WLBT.

The Simpson County Sheriff’s Office received a call around 12:24 p.m. on June 3, after the couple’s family members were unable to contact them. Upon arrival, deputies reportedly encountered gunfire.

Bailey Martin, a spokesperson for the Department of Public Safety, stated that a burglary was already underway when deputies arrived. Both officers and nearby civilians found themselves under heavy gunfire.

The tragic deaths of Billy and Virginia Blair occurred on June 3, according to a family handout.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey mentioned that although the 17-year-old suspect initially indicated he would surrender at the front door, he instead fled through the back, prompting a pursuit. During the incident, a deputy was shot, Bailey added.

Hobbs was eventually arrested after being shot by a Mississippi state trooper and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jason Busby, who was friends with the couple, remembered them as being extremely selfless when speaking with WLBT.

“The man would’ve given you the shirt off his back, his wife is the same, and they’re just great people. It’s just a tragedy,” Busby said. “Everybody around here is still in shock. They were just good people.”
