Jonathan Wilson charged in Uptown, Chicago police shooting on Argyle after condo board president shot, killed: CPD

CHICAGO (WLS) — A 38-year-old Chicago man is facing multiple felony charges, including murder and aggravated assault on a peace officer, following a police-involved shooting on the city’s North Side earlier this week.

Authorities said Jonathan Wilson has been charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and aggravated assault against a peace officer in connection with Monday’s incident.

According to police, Wilson was taken into custody in the 1400 block of Argyle Street in Uptown after allegedly fatally shooting a 63-year-old man in the 4800 block of North Clark Street.

Police said Wilson also pointed a firearm at responding officers, who then shot him.

Residents in the neighborhood previously said the deadly confrontation began when a condominium board president attempted to enforce a court order barring Wilson from the property.

The shooting occurred at about 8:30 p.m. Monday near Clark Street and Lawrence Avenue. Witnesses said the 63-year-old victim — identified by residents of the condo building as “Mark” — confronted Wilson after an alleged domestic dispute. The condo association said a judge had ordered Wilson the week before to stay away from the property.

Wilson’s address is in the 4800-block of North Clark.

“Our president was trying to enforce that order before the police arrived in a very calm, professional way. And, unfortunately, you can never predict how people react,” condominium resident Dan DiPietro-James said.

Police said that after the shooting, officers chased Wilson to the area of Clark and Argyle, where officers shot him after he allegedly pointed a gun at them.

Nearby residents described hearing a rapid burst of gunfire during the incident.

“Just as quick as the argument or scuffle happened, right after were gunshots. And I heard multiple, very quick, probably 10 or more,” said Cynthia Harvanek, who lives near the scene of the police shooting.

The condominium association said Wilson was arrested at the complex last week after allegedly trashing his girlfriend’s home and throwing objects off a balcony.

A protective order was issued by a judge one day after that incident. In that case, the suspect faces misdemeanor charges of assault and criminal damage to property. Records also show a criminal history that includes armed robbery, assault and battery charges.

Police said the suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Three officers were also treated at a hospital and are expected to be OK.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating the officers’ use of force, as required by protocol.
