Despite brutal reviews from some critics, including claims that it was among the worst films of 2026, “Return to Silent Hill” is finding new life on streaming. The horror adaptation has surged to the top of Hulu’s movie rankings in the United States, where it held the No. 1 spot from June 14 through June 17, according to FlixPatrol. The film has also broken into the top 10 in several international markets.
Its strong streaming performance mirrors a surprisingly resilient theatrical run. “Return to Silent Hill” earned $47.8 million worldwide against a reported $23 million budget, a result that reportedly satisfied studio executives and underscored the value of its release strategy. The numbers also highlight the enduring strength of the “Silent Hill” brand, even as the film became one of the year’s more divisive releases.
While audience reaction was mixed, the film clearly connected with a sizable portion of viewers. Some fans were disappointed, but others embraced the adaptation for its atmosphere, ambition and fidelity to the source material.
On Rotten Tomatoes, several viewers praised the effort behind the project. “Tough movie to make, just happy they made it,” one commenter, Jordan, wrote. Another user, Tony R., said the filmmakers “did an amazing job paying homage to the game series” and explored the themes of “Silent Hill 2.” He also commended the film’s mood and pacing, adding that it works as a solid entry point for newcomers. Other fans similarly pointed to the movie’s success in bringing the game’s world into live action.
Some fans definitely loved Return to Silent Hill
Even many of the positive reactions came with some caveats. “Better than last two films, still not as good as the games,” wrote a user identified as Will H. Still, whether viewers see “Return to Silent Hill” as a strong video game adaptation, a worthwhile horror film, or both, its streaming momentum is difficult to ignore.
Most of those viewers noted the hard work that went into making the film. “Tough movie to make just happy they made it,” a commenter named Jordan said. Another reviewer named Tony R. wrote, “They did an amazing job paying homage to the game series and explored each of the themes in Silent Hill 2.” He also praised the film’s mood and pacing, and declared the movie was a solid jumping-off point for newbies. Plenty of fans weighing in noted how good a job the film did translating the game into a live-action film.
Still, some of that praise came with qualifications. “Better than last two films still not as good as the games,” remarked a user named Will H. Whether one thinks “Return to Silent Hill” is just a good video game translation or a good horror film at large, it’s definitely hard to argue with its streaming success.
