A Maryland mother who shot her teenage daughter in the neck, sending the girl to the hospital, and then allegedly told her to lie so the case would “go away,” has now been sentenced to spend the next 50 years in prison.
Court records show that Talecka C. Brown, 34, was sentenced Friday in connection with the 2024 shooting of her daughter, who was 13 at the time. Local CBS affiliate WUSA reported that Brown was ordered to serve five decades behind bars.
As previously reported by Law&Crime, the shooting happened Sept. 23, 2024, during an argument inside the family’s home in Seat Pleasant, an unincorporated area in St. George’s County just east of Washington, D.C. Prosecutors said Brown shot her daughter in the back of the neck.
After calling 911, Brown allegedly gave police a false account, claiming the teen had been shot by a homeless person, according to a report.
Investigators also said Brown tried to persuade her daughter to tell officers that an intruder had entered the home and carried out the shooting.
Authorities further said that, during the investigation, Brown showed no apparent concern for her daughter’s condition, even as the girl was described as being in “screeching pain.”
Prosecutors said that after her arrest, Brown called her daughter’s father from jail and left a message saying that the case “will go away” if the girl simply didn’t talk to cops or show up for court.
“Attempted first-degree murder — come on, that’s not me,” Brown reportedly said on the voicemail.
She was convicted in October of attempted first-degree murder, first-degree child abuse, first-degree assault, and using a firearm as a felon to commit a violent crime, court records show. The jury failed to reach verdicts on charges of second-degree attempted murder, second-degree child abuse, second-degree assault, and reckless endangerment.
Brown faced up to life in prison on the attempted first-degree murder charge.
