Shooting at Montreal grocery store leaves numerous people injured

A gunman opened fire in Montreal on Monday, killing a police officer and a civilian before he was shot dead during a violent confrontation near a grocery store.

The incident unfolded in the city’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood around 12:30 p.m., prompting authorities to urge residents to shelter in place after reports of an armed man moving through the area, according to the Montreal Gazette.

Disturbing video from the scene showed two officers confronting the suspect, who appeared to be wearing camouflage clothing and carrying a rifle as he charged toward them.

The weapon appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle, and witnesses said they heard as many as 30 gunshots during the exchange.

At one point in the footage, one of the officers could be seen on the ground and motionless as the gunfire continued.

“It’s a tragedy. It’s a nightmare,” Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher told reporters after the shooting.

Early reports suggested that both officers involved had been wounded, but Montreal police later confirmed that one officer had died, along with a civilian victim.

“It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” the department said in a statement.

Dagher said the female officer who was injured is now in stable condition and dispelled rumors that there was a second suspect involved.

The shooting occurred near a heavily Jewish section of the city, with several kosher restaurants, a Chabad, Jewish schools and Jewish community centers surrounding the area.

There is no indication yet on the motive.

The gunman and victims have yet to be identified, and the incident remains under police investigation.

Police noted that it had been 24 years since a Montreal officer was killed in the line of duty, with the last being Benoît L’Ecuyer, 29, who was fatally shot on Feb. 28, 2002.

“Such acts have no place here,” Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette said of the shooting.
