FBI joins probe into ‘Free Karmelo’ mob that allegedly beat woman while chanting support for killer: police

Federal authorities are now becoming involved after a Texas woman was allegedly attacked by a group of suspects who, according to police, chanted “Free Karmelo” during the assault.

Longview Police Department Public Information Officer LaDarian Brown said during a news conference that the FBI is assisting because of reported online threats connected to the case.

“We are aware of social media conversations concerning retaliation, division and attacks between members of our community. Those statements are being reviewed seriously,” Brown said.

Brown added that officials do not believe there is an active threat to the public. News Agency has contacted the FBI seeking comment.

News Agency reported that the victim told authorities the suspects said “they [were] going to target the smallest white girl they could find.”

The assault in Longview, Texas, is being investigated amid claims that it may have been motivated by support for Karmelo Anthony, whose case has drawn attention from people challenging the outcome of the legal proceedings. Anthony has been linked to the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas, last year.
