Trader Joe’s is facing a new wave of customer criticism after shoppers noticed a quiet change to one of the chain’s most familiar checkout staples: its brown paper grocery bags.
Customers have been airing their frustrations on social media , accusing the grocer of reducing the size of the signature bags, which generally cost between five and 10 cents depending on the store’s location.
The concern, shoppers say, is that smaller bags could force customers to purchase more of them to carry the same amount of groceries, fueling complaints about “shrinkflation” and adding another cost at checkout.
One Reddit user suggested the change could be particularly frustrating for customers in dense urban areas, where many people carry their groceries home on foot rather than loading them into a car.
“Not sure how these smaller bags will play in NYC, where most customers aren’t putting groceries in the station wagon, but are instead lugging them to their apartments,” the customer wrote.
“Needing three bags to match the capacity of two of the older larger bags may not be appreciated.”
The post quickly drew similar reactions from other Trader Joe’s shoppers online.
Some customers said the redesigned bags are no longer large enough to easily hold items such as flowers, while others argued that a smaller version should not carry the same price as the bags it replaced.

Trader Joe’s has found itself at the center of fresh customer complaints after quietly downsizing one of its most recognizable – and essential – items

Shoppers took to social media to call out the grocery chain for shrinking its signature brown paper bags, which typically cost between five and 10 cents depending on location

Some shoppers said the new bags are too small to comfortably carry flowers, while others argued they shouldn’t cost the same as the previous version given their reduced size
Not everyone was upset, however.
‘I actually like the smaller bags a lot,’ one Reddit user wrote. ‘We just got them back last week and they’re kind of easier to maneuver and it’s easier to not have them end up being super heavy but still be full.’
Others echoed that sentiment, saying the smaller bags are easier to carry and less likely to become overloaded during a shopping trip.
Many suggested that the small bags should appear as an option in addition to the larger bags, so people can choose which size suits their shopping needs.
The reception of the controversial paper bags is a stark contrast from the popularity of the Trader Joe’s canvas tote bags, which have gone viral across the world, despite only costing $2.99.
In early June, Trader Joe’s shoppers braced for a frenzy as the quirky grocery chain prepared to unveil the latest iteration of its cult-favorite tote bag.
The humble canvas tote has gone viral, spotted being carried across the globe – even in countries where the store doesn’t exist.
And just in time for summer, Trader Joe’s has released a striped mini version, available in pastel shades of green, pink, blue, and brown.

What started as a simple $2.99 canvas bag has evolved into a bona fide internet sensation.
Around 2024, Trader Joe’s began releasing mini totes in limited colors and seasonal editions – turning a modest grocery accessory into a collectible phenomenon.
The secret to its meteoric rise? Scarcity. Trader Joe’s never keeps the mini totes in constant supply.
Small batches and seasonal drops sparked immediate FOMO: shoppers lined up early, called stores, and shared sightings online, with many locations selling out within hours.
Over time, the tote became more than just a bag. It’s now a cultural touchstone – a symbol of minimalist, cottagecore-inspired style, US grocery nostalgia, and viral consumer culture.
Some enthusiasts even treat each release like a sneaker drop, carefully monitoring restocks and seasonal editions.
There’s a delicious irony here: a cheap, practical grocery bag has become ‘luxury-coded,’ prized purely for its scarcity and recognizability.
The tote isn’t Trader Joe’s first viral success.
