Thousands of beer cans spill across Connecticut highway after tractor-trailer overturns

A Connecticut highway was shut down for hours Tuesday after a tractor-trailer rolled over and sent thousands of beer cans scattering across the road.

According to Connecticut State Police, the crash happened at about 5:39 a.m. on Route 44 near Twin Lakes Road in Salisbury.

Investigators said the tractor-trailer left the roadway before overturning.

The vehicle was heavily damaged in the wreck, and its load of beer spilled across the highway, police said.

Images shared by state police showed the truck on its side, with cans of Michelob Ultra and Bud Light littering the pavement.

Route 44 stayed closed for several hours as crews worked to clean up the scattered cargo and haul away the overturned tractor-trailer, authorities said.

Police said the extended closure was needed because of the “large volume of debris” and to allow crews to safely remove the damaged truck.

“Thank you to all motorists for your patience and for seeking alternate routes during the closure,” state police said in a statement.

State police said local firefighters, EMS crews, the Connecticut Department of Transportation, the Department of Consumer Protection and towing crews assisted with the cleanup.

Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
