Desperate search for mother and daughter who went missing while hiking rugged San Bernardino trail

Search teams are racing to find a mother and daughter who went missing while hiking one of Southern California’s most challenging mountain routes.

Krystal Meyers, 41, and her 21-year-old daughter, Alexis Meyers Martinez, disappeared Thursday during a hike on the Vivian Creek Trail in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said, according to KTLA.

Investigators said the two were last spotted at about 11 a.m. near 10,300 feet in elevation, above the High Creek switchbacks. After that, authorities said, communication with them was lost.

Crews are searching the remote and rugged wilderness area as they work to locate the missing hikers.

The Vivian Creek Trail is widely regarded as one of the toughest routes in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, rising sharply toward the summit of Mount San Gorgonio, Southern California’s tallest peak.

The U.S. Forest Service describes the trail as the shortest and steepest path to the summit and advises that it is best suited for experienced mountaineers because of the difficult terrain and strenuous conditions.

The San Gorgonio Search and Rescue Team posted the alert Friday as officials asked the public for any information that could help in the search.

Krystal is described as a white woman who is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds, with blonde hair and blue eyes.

Alexis is described as a white woman standing 6 feet tall and weighing roughly 120 pounds. She has black hair.

Investigators are urging anyone who may have seen the pair or has information about their whereabouts to come forward immediately.
