ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WLFA) — Fireworks filled the sky over St. Pete on Saturday night as crowds gathered to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States.
Long before the show began, spectators lined the edges of the North Yacht Basin, hoping to secure a clear view of the celebration. Among them was Marsha Anderson, who said the spot came recommended by friends.
“Our friends had come here to the historic museum function and scoped this out, and we talked and came here,” Anderson said.
Others arrived even earlier to make sure they did not miss out. Jenny Beck said her family claimed their place near the water just after daybreak.
“Since like 6:30. We want to make sure we get a good spot, it’s very important,” she said.
For Anderson, the early planning was part of the tradition. She said St. Pete has a way of turning patriotic celebrations into major community events, and residents know to prepare accordingly.
“Down here, they go all out. And look at the area, look at the people, it’s pretty exciting,” she said.
8 On Your Side also met Carlos Sanchez, who was all decked out in American attire.
“I knew I wanted to come out, celebrate the Fourth of July, celebrate America’s birthday, and just be around this, with fellow Americans who love our country as much as I do,” he said.
