Update on Mitch McConnell health: Kentucky senator says fall led to hospitalization, breaking weeks of silence about condition

WASHINGTON — Sen. Mitch McConnell disclosed Sunday for the first time that a fall was the reason for his hospitalization, addressing weeks of growing questions about the Kentucky Republican’s health.

McConnell, 84, said in a statement that he has been through extensive medical testing as physicians work to identify what caused the fall. He attributed his limited public comments to a generational reluctance, saying that “folks of my generation often hesitate to share the vulnerability that comes with growing older.”

“Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct – I can’t help it,” he said.

McConnell said he is currently staying at a rehabilitation facility and will not return to the Senate “quite yet.” He added that he is continuing to coordinate with his staff on Senate matters while he recovers.

The statement was accompanied by a smiling photo of McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao, appearing to push back against online rumors that he had died or was incapacitated.

His comments follow his June 14 hospitalization. For weeks, McConnell’s office released few details, saying only that he was “receiving excellent care” and recovering. As the hospital stay extended, public speculation intensified, prompting Kentucky’s Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, to make the unusual request that McConnell provide a more “transparent” update on his health.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
