A Nevada man has been sentenced to prison for killing his mother’s boyfriend, a confrontation authorities say erupted after the victim became furious over a slammed door inside the home they shared.

“You [expletive], you [expletive]! Close that door and get that [unintelligible] out of here,” Jamere Watley shouted moments before Akili Porter, the son of Watley’s girlfriend, fatally shot him at their Las Vegas residence, local CBS affiliate KLAS reported.

Porter, 24, admitted guilt in May to second-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon in connection with the September 2025 shooting, according to court records. On Thursday, he received a prison term of 12 to 33 years.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said surveillance footage captured both audio and video of Porter shooting Watley after what investigators described as “an argument” tied to the slammed door.

“Porter pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the victim,” the LVMPD said in a press release. “He exited the house but immediately reentered and shot the victim multiple times.”

Court filings cited by KLAS said Porter’s mother and Watley believed he was struggling with alcohol abuse. His mother told police that Porter had left a rehabilitation program about a month earlier and had resumed drinking.

On the morning of Sept. 21, 2025, Watley and Porter’s mother discovered him passed out in bed after drinking the night before. They tried to take his truck keys to keep him from driving intoxicated, but Porter grew angry, slammed a door and walked out.

The security footage showed Watley getting upset over the slammed door before Porter shot him multiple times, according to police. Porter claimed he was in fear for his life but investigators said he “appeared calm” at the time of the shooting.

Porter was originally charged with open murder with a deadly weapon before pleading guilty to second-degree murder. He will be eligible for parole after 12 years in prison.

“The defendant knows how good of a man Jamere was,” Watley’s sister, Jamillah Douthet, said at Porter’s sentencing, per KLAS.

“It wasn’t right,” Douthet said. “It was premeditated. It was calculated. And it was deliberate. And he did not deserve it.”
