CHICAGO () — Three people were wounded in a shooting early Sunday near the United Center in Chicago’s Near West Side neighborhood, according to police.
Chicago police said two women were seated in a parked vehicle outside the Henry Horner Homes on South Honore Street shortly after 2:15 a.m.
Investigators said someone in a silver sedan then opened fire in their direction.
A resident said the gathering had started as a birthday celebration before it moved outside into the street.
“We were just outside. Everyone having fun, dancing, enjoying themselves. And before you know it, we heard, ‘Pa, pa, pa, pa, pa,'” Katrina Powell said.
One of the victims, a 35-year-old woman, was shot in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition, police said.
Powell said the fast response from people nearby may have helped keep the woman alive.
“My God, sister reacted so fast and saved her life. She put her pressure on her wound,” Powell said. “They did not want to wait on the ambulance. So they end up putting her in someone’s car and rushed her to the hospital themselves.”
The other woman, a 36-year-old was grazed in the head. She was transported to the same hospital in good condition.
A man standing nearby was also hit by gunfire, police said. He self-transported to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he is listed in good condition.
No other injuries were reported.
The shooting comes as Windy City Smokeout wraps up at the United Center on Sunday.
Area Three detectives are investigating. Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
