Tennessee woman arrested after allegedly trying to drown one of her children in backyard pool

A Tennessee mother was taken into custody this week after investigators said she attempted to drown one of her children in a backyard swimming pool.

Mikaylee Rae Beirne, 31, of Johnson City, faces a charge of aggravated child abuse and neglect in connection with the July 15 incident, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Washington County Sheriff Keith Sexton said deputies were called to a home on Cochran Road at about 5 p.m. after receiving a report of a disturbance.

Witnesses told responding deputies that Beirne had been in the backyard pool with several children while another adult remained inside the residence.

Investigators said one of the children ran into the house to warn the adult that Beirne was allegedly holding another child underwater.

The adult hurried outside and ordered Beirne to let the child go, but authorities said she refused.

The adult then pulled Beirne away and helped the child out of the water. Officials said another adult arrived at the home and briefly interacted with Beirne before deputies arrived. Beirne left the scene before law enforcement responded.

The children were taken inside the home while emergency personnel were called. Authorities said the child suffered minor injuries and bruising.
