US hits under-construction nuke plant in Iran: Tehran

US airstrikes on Iran overnight struck a nuclear power plant still under construction, Iranian officials said, sharply condemning the reported attack.

On the eighth straight day of strikes inside Iran, US forces hit the partially built Darkhovin nuclear facility in the country’s southwest, according to Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization. The reported strike came a day after two American service members were said to have been killed, while a third remained missing.

“An attack on a peaceful nuclear facility under international safeguards is a clear violation of international law,” the organization said angrily in a social media post.

The agency did not provide details on the scale of any damage from the alleged strike, which has not yet been confirmed by the US.

Two US military personnel were killed and a third remains missing after an Iranian attack in Jordan, which Tehran launched in response to an earlier American strike on Iran.

The latest round of US airstrikes on Iran began around 6 p.m. ET Saturday on President Trump’s orders, US Central Command said in a statement.

“The strikes are designed to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and swiftly punish Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces who launched attacks against American service members in Jordan last night,” the statement said.

Central Command said the newest attacks successfully hit Iranian military coastal surveillance sites and air-defense facilities.

Iranian state media confirmed that the US carried out an attack near Sirik in the south of the country and a second location near Shadegan close.

The strikes follow a heightened spell of tensions in the region in the wake of the breakdown of a proposed peace agreement signed in June and brokered by Pakistan.

In response to the latest US strikes, Iran also carried out a drone attack targeting US military assets and equipment in Kuwait, according to Iranian state TV reports Sunday.

On Saturday, Iran destroyed at least two US fighter aircraft during a missile and drone attack on a US military base in Jordan, according to Iranian state TV.

Kuwait’s army said Sunday that it had again intercepted Iranian missiles and drones earlier in the day, after coming under sustained attack starting Saturday.

Bahrain’s air defenses also intercepted an Iranian attack Sunday, its state TV reported.

There were no reports of any casualties or damage in these latest attacks, and Iran did not claim responsibility for them.

On Sunday, the international airport and seaport in Aqaba, southern Jordan, were evacuated because of a “specific and credible threat,” added the US embassy in the Jordanian capital Amman.

Jordanian authorities said they had detected no potential threats in the past few hours and hadn’t issued an evacuation order.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced Sunday that it was continuing to blockade the Strait of Hormuz, the crucial chokepoint through which flows one-fifth of the world’s oil supply.

It said four vessels attempted to pass through the waterway using an “unsafe route” with US backing after ignoring IRGC warnings.

Two of the ships abandoned the attempts, while the other two were involved in an “accident,” said the IRGC, while not elaborating.

The deaths of two US service personnel bring the number of American service members killed since the joint US-Israeli war’s start in February to 16, while more than 420 also wounded, according to Central Command.

“Their sacrifice only stiffens our resolve,” US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted on X.

On Saturday, Iran’s Health Ministry said US air strikes had killed 50 people and wounded more than 500 in the past three weeks alone.

The war began Feb. 28 as part of Israeli and the US’s attempts to put an end to Iran’s nuclear program.
