California Rep. Ro Khanna, a leading progressive Democrat who celebrated the return of “DEI” after sweeping party victories in the midterm elections, is now being discussed as a possible 2028 presidential contender.
A new fundraising organization aimed at building support for the Bay Area congressman’s potential White House campaign launched Thursday, NBC News reported.
Former New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman and progressive political strategist Nomiki Konst created the “Run Ro” effort as Democrats continued to revel in a surprising wave of victories across the country.
“By launching now, we are trying to ensure that the presidential primary debate is framed from a progressive populist perspective,” Konst told NBC News.
Khanna expressed appreciation for the backing but said he has not decided whether he will seek the presidency.
“I’m honored that people are encouraging me to run on a platform of Medicare for All, ending foreign wars and taxing the billionaires,” he said. “We need America’s Next New Deal.”
The Silicon Valley lawmaker has made his progressive views central to his public profile. He has also clashed with potential 2028 rival Gavin Newsom over California’s proposed tax on billionaires.
Khanna repeatedly criticized Newsom for declining to support the proposal, which now appears likely to fail.

On Election Night, Khanna celebrated what he described as the resurgence of diversity, equity and inclusion after a series of victories by candidates from minority communities.
“Tonight, DEI is back as America celebrated diversity and inclusion,” Khanna said in a video shared on X.
“Likely three Black governors: the first Latina governor in Texas, the first Muslim American senator, the first gay senator. I love this America tonight,” he added.
Khanna has also taken steps that could help him assess his appeal beyond California. He traveled to Maine to campaign for former congressional candidate Graham Platner, despite initial allegations of sexual misconduct against Platner, who has since faced widespread scrutiny.
In July, Khanna said armed Israeli settlers detained him during a visit to the West Bank. He also warned the Israeli military that “they made a huge mistake.”
While addressing Israel, the congressman appeared to allude to his own possible presidential ambitions.
“Free advice to the Israelis: It’s not a good idea to detain long-shot presidential candidates,” Khanna said. “Not how you’re going to build goodwill with the next American president, whoever that is.”
