Taco Bell launches new veggie-free menu item to win back customers

Move over lettuce, tomatoes and better-for-you toppings.

Taco Bell is leaning hard into indulgence, wagering that diners are more interested in steak, cheese and a vegetable-free bite as the fast-food chain introduces a new low-cost burrito designed to bring budget-conscious customers back.

The company has launched the $3 Melty Pepper Jack Steak Burrito, a limited-time menu item filled with marinated steak, a melted three-cheese blend, pepper jack sauce, seasoned rice and sour cream — and notably, no vegetables at all.

Its debut comes as Taco Bell works to rebuild enthusiasm among customers who, in recent years, have criticized the chain over rising menu prices, weaker value and uneven food quality.

Taco Bell, like several other major fast-food brands, is also still dealing with the lingering effects of the cyclosporiasis outbreak, making the new burrito a fresh option for customers who would rather skip lettuce and other produce.

So far, early buzz suggests the chain may have found a winner. On Reddit, one fan wrote: ‘The melty pepper jack steak burrito is great. Gonna have to get it every time until they get rid of it.’

Another customer called it ‘pretty solid,’ while a third added: ‘For $3 I’m absolutely trying that one. Feels like Taco Bell has been lame lately but maybe this is a step in the right direction.’

The price point is also drawing praise. One diner said, ‘These $3 burritos are usually bangers,’ while another hailed it as the ‘Best LTO (limited-time offer) of the year so far.’

Not everyone was convinced, however.

Some customers complained the steak portions varied wildly between locations.

‘Got the pepper jack steak with extra steak… barely had any steak and was bland. Won’t be ordering it again,’ one Redditor wrote.

Others criticized the new pepper jack sauce, with one customer describing it as ‘sour cream with an unpleasant weirdness,’ while another admitted they were disappointed it didn’t taste like Taco Bell’s beloved Baja sauce from years past.

Price also remained a sticking point. Although Taco Bell advertises the burrito for $3, several customers reported paying much more depending on location.

‘It’s $5 near me,’ one frustrated user posted.

The launch is the latest move in Taco Bell’s effort to rebuild its value reputation after years of criticism from customers who say prices have climbed dramatically.

Across Reddit and social media, many longtime fans have argued the chain has drifted away from its budget-friendly roots.

‘The only allure for me for Taco Bell was it was cheap,’ one user wrote. ‘Now it’s not.’

In response, Taco Bell has increasingly leaned into limited-time promotions and value-focused offers, including its $3-or-less menu, app-exclusive Tuesday Drops, discounted meal bundles and rotating specialty items designed to generate excitement without permanently lowering menu prices.

The new Melty Pepper Jack Steak Burrito joins that strategy alongside a second option – the Fresca Pepper Jack Steak Burrito, which swaps sour cream and rice for lettuce, tomatoes, fiesta strips and spicy ranch.

Ironically, despite carrying the ‘Fresca’ name, it actually contains more calories than the standard version.

The Melty Pepper Jack Steak Burrito contains 440 calories, 20 grams of fat and 18 grams of protein.

The Fresca Pepper Jack Steak Burrito contains 500 calories, 26 grams of fat and 10 grams of protein, despite its seemingly lighter branding.

Taco Bell isn’t alone in chasing customers with cheaper, limited-time menu additions.

As inflation continues squeezing household budgets and traffic slows across the fast-food industry, rivals including McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s and KFC have all rolled out value meals, discount bundles and promotional offers over the past year in an effort to convince diners to return more often.

Industry analysts say many chains are now competing less on premium menu innovation and more on perceived value as consumers become increasingly selective about where they spend their money.
